Roo and Timecode

Roo and I agree on a lot of things, but film choice isn’t one of them. Roo tends to like quite thoughtful, dialogue intensive (some may say arty) films, where as I like films that are very plot heavy, action packed or alternatively have Reese Witherspoon in.

I liked Crash, Roo hated it. He loved Garden State, I thought it was like a bad version of Dawson’s Creek. So normally, we can use this solid opposite foundation as a film recommendation system to each other.

Tonight though, I’m stuck. I just watched Timecode (yes it is 7 years old, I’m behind) and I thought it was brilliant. The trouble is, it also felt like the sort of film I think Roo would like. It’s like a mashup between Crash and Garden State. I think it could it could go either way.

  • You’re right Darren, I did quite like Timecode. Maybe it will mess up our recommendation system.

Mind you, perhaps I didn’t enjoy it quite as much as you. I thought the acting was pretty poor, but the idea behind the film (four scenes, improvised, and all shot at once shown in the four corners) was so cool that it was a compelling watch anyway. I remember I had trouble making it sound good when describing it over lunch a while ago. It’s one of those things you just have to try really.

And I still can’t believe you don’t like Garden State.

  • I really thought I was going to love Garden State, then when I finally saw it I was left with a feeling of disappointment. Can’t even really explain why, it was just missing something for me, but I can’t put my finger on what the “something” was.

I saw A Scanner Darkly this weekend though - that was really good.
