LastFM + IBM’s Directory = IBM Rocks

WARNING. THIS IS A GEEK PROJECT.

IBM Rocks shows what IBMers are listening to around the world.

IBM Rocks

It works by combining data from LastFM and our internal directory, then displays the results on a Poly9 3D earth. It was designed and developed over a cup of tea for an internal IBM Situational Application contest. And really, who needs business value when you can make something look pretty?

Paula thought of the idea and I was chief code monkey / design tart.

  • ok, I have to react… this sounds a lot like what roo, and others from an internal heehaw IBM party talked about. I guess great minds think alike. that’s why I like people who like music… and people who can see the connection to other people because of music. Music is the one uniting force that speaks in every language.

  • oh oh oh, and on the snarky side… don’t forget, IBM doesn’t really WANT to rock, but you definitely rock.

  • Well I spend so much time talking to Roo about stuff, I could quite easily steal all his ideas without even realising it. Though if he ever takes my teleportation one, I’ll know he got it from me.

Oh and also Kelly, do you realise you are making a guest appearance on the map somewhere in the title of a podcast? Check out Turkey. :-)

  • great project. i was wondering how long it generally takes to show up on the map. i’ve been scrobbling from fairfax, va all week, and we don’t even have a dot…again, nice work.

  • Hi Nick,

I need to transfer users across from the internal to the external version manually, so it may be that I have a bit of a backlog.

I’m not on the IBM network for the next week, but I’ll do it as soon as I’m back. If you’re not showing up on the internal version, it probably couldn’t work out where your location was. I’ll check next week.
