I don’t agree with people looking down on pop music because it’s not cool or alternative enough for them, so I wouldn’t normally go along with this campaign. They are right though, UK Christmas Number 1’s are more often than not, awful. Forget the campaign, Lucky Soul’s, Lips Are Unhappy is a catchy song with great lyrics (they sound a lot like The Pipettes). I’ve pre ordered.

The thing I find most interesting about the idea is whether an Internet campaign like this actually stand a snowball’s chance against the TV-reality-show-manufactured group-of-choice who will undoubtedly emerge a week before Christmas and have screaming teens buying singles by the shedload.

They’ve also been clever in doing it as a pre-release and only actually releasing it the week that counts. They’re kind of cheating a bit and buffering up 6 weeks of sales into one.

Which is only a little bit worse than ‘opening weekends’ for films which stretch out for ages beforehand.
I ordered it too. It’s quite good, and for 40p any attempt to mess with the system seems well worth it.
